Most of Ukrainian folklore and conventions are deeply rooted into its long-standing agricultural tradition. Usually, before Christmas comes, rural Ukrainians complete their field works and start preparations for the holiday season. They carefully clean and decorate their homes and prepare holiday meals. It is a tradition to have 12 lean dishes for the Christmas Eve when all the family gathers at the dinner table.
In ancient times, Ukrainian women used to decorate their fireplaces with flowers and spread festive tablecloths and rugs. Men were doing their best to buy new clothes and utensils for all the members of their families. They also used homemade wax to make Christmas candles. Grandmas used to teach their grandchildren singing Christmas carols. Young girls and boys gathered all together to prepare the Nativity show. They practised singing carols and made costumes and traditional stars.
